Term | Definition |
evaluate | To find the value of a numerical or algebraic expression. |
exponent | A number that shows how many times the base is used as a factor. |
numerical expression | A mathematical phrase that uses only numbers and operation signs. |
distributive property | The property which states that multiplying a sum by a number is the same as multiplying each addend in the sum and then adding the products. |
base | A number used as a repeated factor. |
inverse operations | Opposite operations, or operations that undo each other. |
period | Each group of three digits separated by commas in a multi-digit number. |
order of operations | A special set of rules which gives the order in which calculations are done in an expression. |
Commutative property | If the order of addends or factors changes, the sum or product stays the same. |
Associative property | If the grouping of addends or factors changes, the sum or product stays the same. |
Identity property | The sum of any number and 0 is that number; the product of any number and 1 is that number. |
