Term | Definition |
like terms | two or more terms that have the same variable raised to the same power. Ex. In the expression 3a + 5b +12a, 3a and 12a are like terms. |
perfect square | a square of a whole number |
principal square root | the nonnegative square root of a number |
rational number | any number that can be expressed as a ratio of two integers. EX. 6 can be expressed as 6/1 and 0.5 can be expressed as 1/2. |
real number | a rational or irrational number. |
repeating decimals | a decimal in which one or more digits repeat infinitely. |
integers | the set of whole numbers and their opposites. Expressed symbolically {...-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3...} |
whole number | the set of natural numbers and zero. Expressed symbolically {0,1,2,3,...} |
irrational numbers | a number that cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers or as a repeating or terminating decimal. EX. π, √2 |
