Term | Definition |
Mercantilism | the economic theory that trade generates wealth and is stimulated by the accumulation of profitable balances, which a government should encourage by means of protectionism. |
Middle man | a person who buys goods from producers and sells them to retailers or consumers. |
Monarch | a sovereign head of state, especially a king, queen, or emperor. |
Colony | a country or area under the full or partial political control of another country, typically a distant one, and occupied by settlers from that country. |
Indentured servant | a labor system whereby young people paid for their passage to the New World by working for an employer for a certain number of years. It was widely employed in the 18th century in the British colonies in North America and elsewhere. |
Slave | a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them. |
Garrison | the troops stationed in a fortress or town to defend it. |
Trustee | an individual person or member of a board given control or powers of administration of property in trust with a legal obligation to administer it solely for the purposes specified. |
Charter | a written grant by a country's legislative or sovereign power, by which an institution such as a company, college, or city is created and its rights and privileges defined. |
Regulations | a rule or directive made and maintained by an authority. |
Artisan | a worker in a skilled trade, especially one that involves making things by hand. |
Militia | a military force that is raised from the civil population to supplement a regular army in an emergency. |
