Term | Definition |
Area | The measure of the amount of surface enclosed by the boundary of a two-dimensional figure. Example: painting a wall, carpeting a floor) |
Perimeter | The measure of the distance around a two-dimensional figure. Example: Fencing around a garden, trim along the walls) |
Scalene triangle | A triangle with no sides of the same length |
Surface Area | The total area of all the faces of a three-dimensional shape |
Vertex | The corner of a polygon |
Volume | The measure of space occupied by a three-dimensional shape; the number of unit cubes that will fit inside a three-dimensional shape |
Edge | A line segment that is formed where two faces of a three-dimensional figure meet |
Equilateral triangle | A triangle with all three sides of the same length |
Face | A flat, two-dimensional surface of a three-dimensional shape |
Isosceles triangle | A triangle with two sides of the same length |
Net | A two-dimensional pattern that can be folded into a three-dimensional figure |
Regular polygon | A polygon with all of its angles AND side lengths equal |
Right triangle | A triangle with one right angle |
Obtuse triangle | A triangle with one obtuse angle |
Acute triangle | A triangle with all acute angles |
Right angle | An angle that measures exactly 90 degrees |
Perpendicular lines | Two lines that intersect to form right angles |
Parallel lines | Two lines that will never intersect |
Polygon | A closed shape formed by line segments, called sides (striaght lines, no intersections, closed figure) |
Prism | A three-dimensional shape with a top and bottom base that are congruent polygons and all other sides are parallelograms |
Pyramid | A three-dimensional shape with one polygonal base and all other triangular sides that meet at a vertex opposite the base |
Adjacent | Means "next to" |
Congruent | Having the exact same size and shape |
Similar | Describes figures that have the same shape, but not necessarily the same size, corresponding sides are proportional in length |
Parallelogram | A quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides (opposite sides are also congruent) |
Trapezoid | A quadrilateral with at least one pair of opposite sides that are parallel |
Rhombus | A quadrilateral that has all sides of the same length |
Square | A quadrilateral with all sides of the same length and four right angles |
Quadrilateral | A polygon with four sides |
Height | The perpendicular distance from a vertex to the opposite side (base) of a figure |
