Term | Definition |
graph | Represents numerical information in a visual form. The numbers may come from a table, situation (pattern), or rule (equation or inequality). |
growth triangle | A right triangle drawn on a graph of a line so that the hypotenuse of the triangle is part of the line. The vertical leg length is the change in the y-value; the horizontal leg length is the change in the x-value. |
parabola | A particular kind of mathematical curve. In this course, it is always the graph of a quadratic function y = ax2 + bx + c where a does not equal 0. |
parameter | In general, equations where x and y represent the inputs and outputs of the function, variables such as b and m are often referred to as parameters, and they are often replaced with specific values. |
rule | An equation or inequality that represents the relationship between two numerical quantities. It is often used to represent the relationship between quantities in a table, a pattern, a real-world situation, or a graph. |
solution | The number or numbers that when substituted into an equation or inequality make the equation or inequality true. |
tile pattern | A set of things in order that change in a regular way. For example, the numbers 1, 4, 7, 10, … form a pattern, because each number increases by 3. |
variable | A symbol used to represent one or more numbers. |
y-intercept | The point(s) where a graph intersects the y-axis. A function has at most one of these; a relation may have several. This is important because it often represents the starting value of a quantity in a real-world situation. |
