Term | Definition |
Atmosphere | A mixture of gases that surrounds a planet or moon. |
Air pressure | The measure of the force that air molecules put on a surface, greatest in the Troposphere. |
Troposphere | Lowest layer of the atmosphere; temperature decreases at a constant rate as altitude increases and contains 21% Oxygen. |
Stratosphere | Layer of the atmosphere above the troposphere where temperature increases as altitude increases and the ozone layer is located. |
Mesosphere | The layer of the atmosphere between the stratosphere and the thermosphere and in which temperature decreases as altitude increases - coldest layer. |
Thermosphere | The uppermost layer of the atmosphere, in which temperature increases as altitude increases - hottest layer. |
Ionosphere | An area between the Mesosphere and the Thermosphere where particles become electrically charged - Aurora's occur here. |
Thermal Conduction | The transfer of energy as heat through a material. |
Convection | The transfer of thermal energy by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas. |
Greenhouse effect | The natural warming of Earth's atmosphere when carbon dioxide, and water vapor absorb and reradiate thermal energy. |
Global Warming/Climate Change | A gradual increase in average global temperatures brought on by too much carbon dioxide. |
wind | The movement of air caused by differences in air pressure. |
Polar Easterlies | Prevailing winds that blow from east to west between 60° and 90° latitude in both hemispheres. |
Westerlies | Prevailing winds that blow from west to east between 30° and 60° latitude in both hemispheres. |
Trade Winds | Prevailing winds that blow northeast from 30° North or 30° South to the equator. |
