Chemistry | The study of matter and how matter changes. |
Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
Reactants | The substances on the left side (beginning) of a chemical equation. |
Chemical equation | A shorter, easier way to show chemical reactions using symbols instead of words. |
Conservation of mass | Matter is not created or destroyed. |
Endothermic | A chemical reaction that absorbs energy in the form of heat. |
Activation energy | The minimum amount of energy that has to be added to start a reaction. |
Inhibitor | A material used to decrease the rate of a chemical reaction. |
Combustion | A rapid reaction between oxygen and a fuel. |
Enzymes | Chemicals that act as biological catalysts by speeding up reactions in living things. |
Subscript | The number placed below an element's symbol in a chemical formula. |
Chemical change | A change that produces a new substance. |
Coefficient | Tells you how many atoms or molecules of a reactant or a product take part in a reaction. |
Precipitate | A solid that forms from solution during a chemical reaction. |
Exothermic | A chemical reaction that releases energy in the form of heat. |
Open system | Where matter can enter from or escape to the surroundings. |
Chemical formula | Shows the ratio of elements present in a compound. |
