Denudation | Occurs by Weathering and Erosion |
Weathering | This is the breakdown and decay of rocks that are exposed to the weather. Waste material is not removed |
Erosion | This is the breaking down of rocks and the removal of the particles that result |
Mechanical Weathering | Causes rock to be physically broken into smaller pieces |
Chemical Weathering | This occurs when rocks decay or dissolve due to a chemical change |
Freeze thaw action | A type of mechanical weathering, can be known as frost action |
Carbonation | A type of chemical weathering,needs carbon dioxide and rainwater to occur |
Stalactites | Icicle shaped pieces of calcite that hang from the ceiling of a cavern |
Stalagmites | Cone shaped pieces of calcite that build up from the ground |
Pillar/Column | Feature formed when a stalactite and stalagmite join together |
Cavern | The chamber formed when a cave is enlarged |
Swallow Hole | The passage through which a river disappears in a Karst region |
Grikes | Gashes on limestone pavement that are enlarged by carbonation |
Limestone Pavement | Flat terraces of exposed Limestone |
Bedding Planes | The horizontal cracks in limestone |
Joints | The vertical cracks in limestone |
Scree | The waste material formed as a result of freeze thaw action |
Flora | The plant life of an area |
Fauna | The wildlife of an area |
Carbonic Acid | The weak acid rain formed when carbon dioxide and rainwater are mixed |
Karst Region | An area where soil has been removed and limestone is exposed at the surface |
Calcium Carbonate | Otherwise known as dissolved limestone (CC) |
The Burren | Karst landscape of world importance, comes from the Irish for 'rocky place' |
