Question | Answer |
What is the albedo effect | the reflectiveness of the earth, white surfaces such as ice reflect lots of energy and so are cooler, dark colours such as green rainforests reflect less energy and so are warmer. |
Why are the poles cooler than the equator | energy is recieved at a direct angle at the equator and so has a smaller area to heat up, whereas at the poles the energy is spread over a larger area due to the curvature of the earth and so the area is cooler |
How does the atmosphere affect the energy difference between the poles and the equator | the energy that reaches the poles is at an angle due to the curve of the earth and so passes through more atmosphere so more of the energy is reflected by dust and clouds and less energy reaches the earth's surface. The energy recieved at the equator is |
How does the tilt of the earth affect the energy recieved by the poles | for 6 months of the year the poles recieve no energy because they are tilted away from the sun, so each of the poles only recieves energy for 6 months, whereas the equator recieves energy all year round |
