Term | Definition |
Cardiovascular | Pertaining to the heart and blood vessels. Composed of heart, arteries and veins. |
Heart | Sits between the lungs; behind the sternum (breast bone) in the mediastinum. It is divided left and right by the septum (a muscular) wall. It has a two layered protective membrane. Called the Pericardium |
Pericardium | Two layers, one sac inside another. Parietal pericardium and visceral pericardium. |
Parietal Pericardium | Lies posterior and adjacent to the thoracic vertebrae and inferiorly to the diaphragm. It provides an efficient barrier to infection from surrounding structures. |
Visceral Pericardium or Epicardium | Adheres to the heart and the first several centimeters of the great vessels. Pericardial fluid lubricates the pericardium and facilitates movement during the heart's pumping action. |
Great Vessels | Aorta, Pulmonary Trunk, Pulmonary Veins, Superior and Inferior Vena Cava |
Heart Layers | Epicardium, myocardium, innermost endocardium |
Epicardium or Visceral Pericardium | Covers the heart's surface and extends to the great vessels. (Aorta, Pulmonary Trunk, Pulmonary Veins, Superior and Inferior Vena Cava) |
Myocardium | Is the contracting muscle of the heart and consists of striated muscle fibers interlaced into bundles. |
Endocardium | Innermost muscle is composed of a thin layer of endothelium and a thin layer of connective tissue. |
