5 point summary | Consists of 5 data values, lower extreme, upper extreme, lower quartile, upper quartile, and median |
Biased Sample | A sample in which members are not randomly selected |
Box Plot | A graphical display of a 5 point summary ( uses 5 data values) |
Box and Whisker Plot | A graphical display of a 5 point summary |
First Quartile | Also known as the lower quartile. It is the median of the lower half of the data set |
Interquartile Range | Difference between the first and the third quartile |
Leaf | The least digit in each item of the data set, when displayed in a stem and leaf plot. |
Lower Quartile | The median of the lower half of a data set. 25% of the data fall on or below this value |
Mean Absolute Deviation | The average distance of each item of data from the mean |
Measure of variation | A measure of the spread of data from a measure of center |
population | all the members or objects about which you want information |
random sample | a set of data randomly selected from a population so that every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected |
range | The difference between the greatest and the least values in a data set |
sample | a set of data taken from a population |
sample size | the number of members in a sample |
second quartile | the median of a data set. 50% of the data fall on or below this value |
simple random sampling | a sampling method in which every member of a population has an equal chance of being selected |
stem | all digits except the one of least place value in an item of data displayed in a stem and leaf plot |
stem and leaf plot | a two column graphical display in which the least digit of each item of data is displayed in the right column and the other digits in the left column |
stratified random sampling | a sampling method in which the population is divided into nonoverlapping groups from which members are randomly selected |
systematic random sampling | a sampling method in which the first member is randomly selected, and the subsequent members are selected at regular intervals |
third quartile | the median of the upper half of a data set, also known as the upper quartile. 75% of the data fall on or below this value |
unbiased sample | a set of data randomly selected from a population so that every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected |
upper quartile | the value in a data set that 75% of the data fall on or below this value also known as quartile 3 |
