Term | Definition |
Reference Map | Mapping that includes all possible valid relationships between a source system and a target system. |
Thematic Map | Mapping that is specifically designed to show a certain theme or topic, such as temperatures, climates, elevation or population. |
GPS | Global Positioning System; A space-based satellite program that provides location and time information during all weather conditions on the Earth when there is a clear line for four or more GPS satellites. |
GIS | Geographic Information System; A system that uses hardware, software and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. |
Distance Scale | A statement of the relationship between distances on a map and the distances in real life. |
Directional Indicator | An arrow on a map that points in the direction that indicates the orientation of the map. |
Inset Map | A more detailed (larger scale) representation of a specific area on the map and is usually placed in an uncluttered portion of the same sheet as the smaller scale map. |
Legend | The wording on the map that helps to understand what the symbols mean. |
Latitude/Parallels | The imaginary horizontal lines that define the Earth’s shape and are defined as North or South. |
longitude/Meridians | The imaginary vertical lines that define the Earth’s shape and are defined as East or West. |
Equator | The horizontal line that is placed along the 0 degree North/South mark. |
Prime Meridian | The vertical line that is placed along the 0 degree East/West mark. |
Northern Hemisphere | The upper half of the globe, split along the equator. |
Southern Hemisphere | The lower half of the globe, split along the equator. |
Eastern Hemisphere | The right half of the globe, split along the Prime Meridian |
Western Hemisphere | The left half of the globe, split along the Prim Meridian. |
Continents | Any of the world's main continuous expanses of land. |
Map Grid | A symbolized network of lines representing parallels and meridians. |
