Term | Definition |
reference map | Mapping that includes all possible valid relationships between a source system and a target system. |
thematic map | A thematic map is a type of map or chart especially designed to show a particular theme connected with a specific geographic area. |
GPS | A system of satellites, computers, and receivers that is able to determine the latitude and longitude of a receiver on Earth by calculating the time difference for signals from different satellites to reach the receiver. |
GIS | GIS is a system of hardware and software used for storage, retrieval, mapping, and analysis of geographic data. |
distance scale | In physics, length scale is a particular length or distance determined with the precision of one order of magnitude |
directional indicator | An instrument which displays heading transmitted electrically from a remote compass system. |

latitude (parallels) | A circle of latitude on the Earth is an imaginary east-west circle connecting all locations having a given latitude |
longitude (meridians) | The meridian through Greenwich, England, also called the Prime Meridian was set at zero degrees of longitude, while other meridians were defined by the angle at the center of the earth between where it and the prime meridian cross the equator. |
Equator | An imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres and constituting the parallel of latitude 0°. |
Prime Meridian | A planet's meridian adopted as the zero of longitude. |
northern hemisphere | The hemisphere that is to the north of the equator. |
southern hemisphere | The hemisphere to the south of the equator. |
eastern hemisphere | The hemisphere that includes Eurasia and Africa and Australia. |
western hemisphere | The hemisphere that includes North America and South America. |
continents | Any of the world's main continuous expanses of land (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America). |
