Term | Definition |
constants of proportionality | he constant value of the ratio of two proportional quantities x and y; usually written y = kx, where k is the factor of proportionality |
direct variation | two variables that can be expressed by an equation in which one variable is equal to a constant times the other |
linear equation | an equation of the first degree in any number of variables |
point-slope form | The equation of a straight line in the form y-y1= m (x-x1), where m is the slope of the line and (x1, y1) are the coordinates of a given point on the line in a Cartesian coordinate system. |
slope-intercept | the equation of a straight line in the form y = mx + b where m is the slope of the line and b is its y-intercept |
rate of change | a value that results from dividing the change in a function of a variable by the change in the variable <velocity is the rate of change in distance with respect to time> |
slope | the tangent of the angle between the line and another line parallel to the x-axis |
x-intercept | the x-coordinate of a point where a line, curve, or surface intersects the x-axis |
y-intercept | the y-coordinate of a point where a line, curve, or surface intersects the y-axis |
unit rate | a price or charge with reference to a standard or scale |
proportional relationship | Two quantities are proportional if they vary in such a way that one of them is a constant multiple of the other. |
intersecting lines | The notion of line or straight line was introduced by ancient mathematicians to represent straight objects with negligible width and depth. Lines are an idealization of such objects |
