Term | Definition |
First Amendment | freedom of speech, press, religion, assembly,and petition |
Second Amendment | right to serve in militia and bear arms |
Third Amendment | limits governments power to house solders with citizens |
Fourth Amendment | protects against unreasonable search and seizure |
Fifth Amendment | "Due Process": protects a person accused of a crime; must follow specific procedures before convicting |
Sixth Amendment | additional rights of accused: trial by jury representation of a lawyer |
Seventh Amendment | right to a jury in civil cases (those not involving a crime) |
Eighth Amendment | prohibits excusive bail or fines as well as cruel or unusual punishment |
Ninth Amendment | says that these enumerated rights are not the only rights that citizens have |
Tenth Amendment | powers not specifically givin to national governments or denied belong to the states |
Petition | a formal request |
Poll tax | money paid in order to vote |
Treason | words or actions that endanger the government |
Suffrage | the right to vote |
Eminent Domain | right of the government to take private property for public use |
Due process | following rules established to protect those accused of crime |
Double jeopardy | cannot be put on trial twice for the same crime |
Indict | to formally accuse someone of a crime |
