Term | Definition |
Term | A number, a variable, or a product of numbers and variables. |
Variable | A symbol, typically a lower case letter, that is used to represent an unspecified number. |
Algebriac Expression | An expression consisting of one or more numbers and variables along with one or more arithmetic operations. |
Equation | A mathematical sentence that compares two expressions linked by an equals sign (=). |
Inequality | A mathematical sentence comparing two expressions that are linked by one of the following: <, <, >, or >. |
Real Numbers | The set of rational numbers and irrational numbers together form the set of real numbers. |
Natural Numbers | The set of counting numbers expressed as {1,2,3,...}. |
Intigers | The set of numbers represented as {..., -3,-2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3,...}. |
Rational Number | A number that can be expressed as a ratio of two integers, except that the denominator cannot be equal to zero. |
Irrational Number | A number that cannot be expressed in the form (a/b) where a and b are integers and b <> 0. |
Coefficiant | The numerical factor in a term. In the term 4x, 4 is the coefficient. |
Constant | A monomial term that lacks a variable component. |
Arithmetic Operation | A mathematical process of addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. |
Exponent | In an expression of the form x^n, the exponent is n. The exponent represents the number of times the base is multiplied by itself. |
Polynomial | A monomial or a sum of monomials. |
Binomial | The sum of two monomials. |
Trinomial | The sum of three monomials, assuming that like terms have been combined. |
Monomial | A number, a variable, or a product of a number and one or more variables. |
Like Terms | Terms that contain the same variables. |
Absolute Value | The distance the number is from the zero point on the number line. |
