Term | Definition |
Statistics | The science of collecting, organizing, summarizing, and analyzing information to draw conclusions or answer questions. In addition, stats is about providing a measure of confidence in any conclusions |
Data | a fact or proposition used to draw a conclusion or make a decision |
Population | the entire group of individuals to be studied |
individual | member of a population |
sample | subset of a population that is studied |
inferential statistics | uses methods that take a result from a sample and extend it to the population, measuring the reliability of the result |
parameter | a numerical summary of a population |
descriptive stats | describes the population without making any general conclusions about the population |
process of statistics | identify the research objective. collect the data needed to answer the questions. perform inference |
variables | the characteristics of the individuals within the population |
approach | a way to look at and organize a problem so that it can be solved |
discrete | can be counted |
continuous | can be measured |
nominal lvl of measurement | values of the variable name, label, or categorize |
ordinal lvl of measurement | naming scheme allows for values to be ranked |
interval lvl of measurement | differences in the values of the variable have meaning |
ratio | zero expresses absence |
confounding | occurs when the effects of two or more explanatory variables are not separated |
