cell membrane | forms the boundary of the cell |
cytoplasm | gel-like fluid inside the cell |
nucleus | largest structure within the cell, usually spherical and centrally located. -contains chromosomes for cellular reproduction & is control centre of the cell |
chromosomes | located in the nucleus of cell 46 total chromosomes in all normal human cells sex cells, 23. |
genes | regions within chromosome. Each chromosome has several thousand genes that determine hereditary characteristics |
DNA | deoxyribonucleic acid comprises each gene, is genetic material that regulates activities of the cell |
tissue | group of similar cells that performs a specific function |
muscle tissue | composed of cells that have special ability to contract, usually producing movement |
nervous tissue | found in the nerves, spinal cord, and brain. responsible for coordinating and controlling body activities |
connective tissue | connects, supports, penetrates, and encases various body structures. Adipose(fat), osseous (bone) tissues, and blood are types |
epithelial tissue | major covering of the external surface of the body, forms membranes that line body cavities & organs & is the major tissue in glands |
organ | two or more kinds of tissues that together perform special body functions e.g.skin is an organ composed of epithelial, connective, muscle, & nerve tissue |
system | group of organs that work together to perform complex body functions e.g. heart->blood, blood vessels. Transport nutrients & oxygen to cells and remove co2 & waste |
Integumentary System | Composed of skin, nails, and glands. -protective covering of body, regulates temp, helps manufacture vit D |
Respiratory system | Nose, pharynx(throat), larynx(voice box), trachea(windpipe), bronchial tubes,& lungs -performs respiration which provides for the exchange of oxygen and co2 within body |
Urinary system | Kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra. -removes waste material (urine) from the body, regulates fluid volume, & maintains electrolyte concentration |
Reproductive system | female- ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, vagina, and mammary glands male- testes, urethra, penis, prostate gland & associated tubes. |
Cardiovascular system | Composed of the heart & blood vessels. -Pumps and transports blood throughout body |
Lymphatic system | composed of a network of vessels, ducts, nodes, & organs -Provides defense against infection |
Digestive System | Composed of the gastrointestinal tract which includes esophagus, stomach, large&small intestine, plus accessory organs, liver, gallblader, pancreas -prepares food for use by body & eliminates waste |
Musculoskeletal system | muscles, bones, joints -provides movement & framework for body, protects vital organs such as brain, stores calcium, & produces red blood cells |
Nervous system | brain, spinal cord, nerves -Regulates body activities by sending and receiving messages |
Endocrine system | composed of glands that secret hormones. -hormones regulate many body activities |
