operation | A mathematical process (Most common + - x divide) Also, square root and exponents. |
algebraic expression | Numbers, symbols and operators (such as + and ×) grouped together that show the value of something. A number sentence. |
numeric expression | A mathematical phrase involving only numbers and one or more operational symbols. |
evaluate | To calculate or solve an expression |
simplify | To rewrite an expression in to its simplest form |
rational number | A real number that can be written as a ratio of two integers (a fraction) |
irrational number | Numbers that cannon be written in the form of a ratio (fraction) |
square root | A number that when multiplied by itself is equal to the given number |
perfect square | A number that is the square of a whole number |
terminating decimal | A decimal that stops |
repeating decimal | A decimal that has a repeating number or pattern that goes on forever |
integers | Numbers in this set = {..., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, ...} |
inequality | General name for showing that two things are notequal: a < b says that a is less than b a > b says that a is greater than b |
variable | A symbol for a number we don't know yet. It is usually a letter like x or y. |
natural numbers | Numbers in this set = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5…} |
counterexample | Is an example that shows that a statement is not always |
base | The number that is going to be raised to a power. |
real numbers | Positive or negative, large or small, whole numbers or decimal numbers are all this type of number. They are not Imaginary Numbers (although those do exist). The largest number family. |
exponent | Shows how many times the number is to be used in a repeated multiplication. |
power | The whole unit of a base raised to an exponent |
whole numbers | Numbers in this set = {0, 1, 2, 3, ...} |
radicand | The value inside the radical sign. The value you want to take the root of. |
inverse | The opposite of a number |
absolute value | How far a number is from zero. |
reciprocal | If you multiply a number by this you get 1. Also called the multiplicative inverse. |
multiplicative inverse | Another name for reciprocal. When you multiply a number by this you get 1. |
distribute | - to give or deliver (something) to people - to deliver (something) to a store or business - to divide (something) among the members of a group |
term | * a single number, or * a variable, or * numbers and variables multiplied together. |
like terms | Terms whose variables (and their exponents) are the same. |
coefficient | A number used to multiply a variable |
constant | A number on its own, or sometimes a letter such as a, b or c to stand for a fixed number. |
distributive property | Multiply a number by a group of numbers. The jumping property. |
equation | A expression that states two things are the equal. It uses an equals sign. |
solution | The answer to a problem. |
open sentence | A mathematical statement that can be either true or false depending what values are used. |
inductive reasoning | Making a conclusion based on an established pattern |
radical | An expression that has a square root, cube root, etc. The symbol is √ |
