Term | Definition |
Whole Numbers | A whole number doesn't contain a fraction. e.g. 0,1,2,3 |
Negative Numbers | Less than Zero Negatives represented by RED on the numberline e.g. -1, -55, |
Fractions | Part of a whole. · the bottom number (the denominator) says how many parts the whole is divided into · the top number (the numerator) says how many you have. je.g. 1/4, 19/10 |
Decimals | Often "decimal number" is also used to mean a number that uses a decimal point followed by digits as a way of showing values less than one. Example: 1.9 is a decimal number (one and nine tenths) |
Positive Integers | A set of integers to the right of 0 on a number line. e.g. 1,2,3,4,... Represented by the color Black |
rational number | Any number that can be made by dividing one integer by another. The word comes from "ratio". e.g. 1/2 or .5 and 3/2 or 1.5 NOTE: Pi 22/7 is NOT rational |
repeating decimal | A decimal that has a group of one or more digits that repeat endlessly. e.g. 1/3 or .333 and 2/3 or .666 |
terminating decimal | A decimal that has a finite number of nonzero decimal places e.g. 1.5, 2.34522 |
real number | set of numbers that consists of rational and irrational numbers |
absolute value | How far a number is from zero. Example "6" is 6 away from zero, but "-6" is also 6 away from zero. |
square root | The square root of a number is a value that, when multiplied by itself, gives the number. Example: 4 × 4 = 16, so the square root of 16 is 4. |
cube root | The cube root of a number is a special value that, when used in a multiplication three times, gives that number. Example: 3 × 3 × 3 = 27, so the cube root of 27 is 3. |
