Term | Definition |
Correlation: | The relationship between the changes in x and the changes in y. |
Linear function | A function that forms a line. y=mx + b or ax + by = c. |
Nonlinear function | Any function that does not form a line. x may be squared, or in the denominator or under a square root sign. |
Parent function | The simplest version of each type of function. |
Rate of change | The relationship between two amounts. For example miles per hour or dollars per hour. |
Coefficient | A number in front of a variable. In y = 2x +3, 2 is the ___________. |
Constant | A number or term that does not have a variable and does not change. In y = 2x +3, 3 is the ____________. |
Scatterplot | A series of points on a graph. It usually represents collected data. |
Slope | A number that represents the angle of a line. It is found by Δy/Δx or rise/run. |
Slope-intercept form | A way to write a line that tells the slope and the y-intercept. The form is y = mx + b. “m” is the slope and “b” is the y-intercept. |
Trend line | In a scatterplot, it is the line that runs down the middle of the points. You can use this line to make predictions about y values at different x values. |
X-intercept | The place where a line crosses the x axis. It is also the point where y = 0. |
Y-intercept | The place where the line crosses the y-axis. It is also the place where x = 0. |
zeroes | The _______ of a function are the places where the function equals zero (where y = 0). It is also the x-intercepts of the function. |
Δx | The change in x. |
Δy | The change in y. |
Solution | The answer to a problem. When you have an equation with one variable, it is a value of that variable that makes the equation true. |
horizontal | A flat line running from right to left. |
vertical | A line running up and down. |
parallel | Two lines with the same slope. They are always the same distance from each other and never cross. |
reciprocals | Two numbers that are fractions that are flipped. |
scatter plot | Points on a graph that do not define a straight line but may show a general trend. |
trend line | A line on a scatter plot that shows the general direction or trend of the points. |
point slope form | A way to write a linear equation that gives a point and the slope. y-y1=m(x-x1) |
standard form | A way to write a linear equation that gives rates of change for both variables and a total amount. ax+by=c |
