Term | Definition |
Graph | A drawing of something. |
Grid | Vertical and horizontal lines put together for graphing. |
Plane | A flat surface, especially one that goes on forever. |
Coordinate | A location defined by points on a grid or on a map. |
Coordinate plane | A plane that is marked with a grid and allows you to place points at certain coordinates. |
Axis | A line used as a reference point. On a coordinate plane there are two: the x-_______and the y-_______. |
x-axis | The axis (or line) that runs horizontal (side to side) on a coordinate plane. |
y-axis | The axis (or line) that runs vertical (up and down) on a coordinate plane. |
origin | The place where the x-axis and the y-axis meet. |
ordered pair | A point is defined by an x value and a y value. These are always listed in certain order (x, y). |
Quadrant | The four sections of a coordinate plane separated by the two axes. |
Quadrant 1 | Quadrant where x and y are positive. (+x, +y) |
Quadrant 2 | Quadrant where x is negative and y is positive. (-x, +y) |
Quadrant 3 | Quadrant where x and y are negative. (-x, -y) |
Quadrant 4 | Quadrant where x is positive and y is negative. (+x, -y) |
Relation | A set of x and y points that are paired together. Any set of ordered pairs. |
Domain | The x values of a relation. For the points (2, 3), (-3, 5), (-5, 3), the ______________ is [2, -3, -5]. |
Range | The y values of a relation. For the points (2, 3), (-3, 5), (-5, 3), the __________ is [3, 5, 3]. |
Function | A special type of relation where every x value only has one y value. |
Independent variable | In an equation, the _________________ variable is the one that does not depend on another value. In y = 2x – 5, “x” is the ________________ variable. |
Dependent variable: | In an equation, the ________________ variable is the one that depends on another value. In y = 2x – 5, “y” is the ____________ variable. |
Continuous data | Data that includes all points or values between them. These are values where it makes sense to have a decimal or fraction answer. On a graph it would be a line or curve. |
Discrete data | Data sets that contain only certain points or have breaks in the data. These are values where not all values are included or make sense. On a graph it would be separate points. |
Parent function | The simplest form of a type of function. |
