Term | Definition |
States' rights | the rights and powers held by individual US states rather than by the federal government; the main cause of the Civil War |
Nullification | the act of cancelling something, specifically the belief that states could cancel a law they disagreed with |
Compromise | the settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions |
Georgia platform | a statement executed by Georgia politicians in response to the Compromise of 1850; accepted the Compromise and kept Georgia from seceding |
Secession | the formal withdrawal from membership of a federation or body, especially a political state |
Blockade | an act of sealing off a place to prevent goods or people from entering or leaving |
Reconstruction | a thing that has been rebuilt after being damaged or destroyed |
Freedman's Bureau | an agency of the War Department set up in 1865 to assist freed slaves in obtaining relief, land, jobs, fair treatment, and education |
Sharecropping | a tenant farmer who gives a part of each crop as rent; gives a higher portion than a tenant farmer since they are given more supplies, etc. |
Tenant farming | a person who farms rented land; gives a smaller portion of each crop than a sharecropper since they bring more of their own supplies |
Triumvirate | a group of three men holding power |
Populists | a political party that advocated for the interests of ordinary people, the free coinage of silver, a graduated income tax, and government control of monopolies |
Disenfranchisement | being deprived of a right or privilege, especially the right to vote |
Anti-Semitism | hostility toward or prejudice against Jews |
Great Depression | the financial and industrial slump of 1929 and subsequent years |
New Deal | a group of government programs and policies that were designed to improve conditions for persons suffering in the Great Depression |
Lend-Lease Act | the matériel and services supplied by the U.S. to its allies during World War II |
