Term | Definition |
Algebraic expression | A mathematical phrase involving at least one variable and sometimes numbers and operation symbols. |
Associative Property | The sum or product of a set of numbers is the same no matter how the numbers are grouped. |
Coefficient | A number multiplied by a variable in an algebraic expression. |
Commutative Property | The sum or product of a group of numbers is the same regardless of the order in which the numbers are arranged. |
Cubed | A number to the third power |
Equation | A mathematical sentence that contains an equal sign |
Exponent | The number of times a number or expression (called base) is used as a factor of repeated multiplication. Also called the power. |
Inequality | A mathematical sentence that contains the symbols >, <, ≥, or ≤. |
Inverse Operation | Opposite operations that undo each other. Example: subtraction is the opposite of addition. |
Like Terms | Terms in an algebraic expression that have the same variable raised to the same power. Only the coefficients of like terms are different. |
Order of Operations | The rules that tell which operation to perform first when more than one operation is used (PEMDAS) |
Term | A number, a variable, or a product of numbers and variables. |
Squared | A number to the second power |
Variable | A letter or symbol used to represent a number or quantities that vary |
Constant | A quantity that does not change its value. |
Constant of Proportionality | The constant value of the ratio of two proportional quantities x and y; usually written y = kx, where k is the value of the ratio between y and x. |
Dependent Variable | A variable, y, that depends on other factors. |
Independent Variable | A variable, x, that stands alone and is not changed by other variables. |
Solution | The set of all values which, when substituted for unknowns, make an equation or inequality true. |
Substitution | The process of replacing a variable in an expression with its actual value. |
