potential energy | The mechanical energy that a body has by virtue of its position; stored energy |
kinetic energy | The mechanical energy that a body has by virtue of its motion |
Law of Conservation of Energy | The fundamental principle of physics that the total energy of an isolated system is constant despite internal changes |
radiant energy | Energy that is transmitted in the form of (electromagnetic) radiation; energy that exists in the absence of matter |
electrical energy | energy made available by the flow of electric charge through a conductor |
chemical energy | Part of the energy in a substance that can be released by a chemical reaction |
Thermal energy | The internal energy of a system in thermodynamic equilibrium due to its temperature |
mechanical energy | Type of energy that makes objects move. |
renewable energy resources | Energy resources that are naturally replenishing but flow-limited. They are virtually inexhaustible in duration but limited in the amount of energy that is available per unit of time. Ex: Solar, wind |

force | A dynamic influence that changes a body from a state of rest to one of motion or changes its rate of motion. |
Balanced force | Object does not move or moves at a constant unchanging rate when forces are this |
Unbalanced forces | Object changes its velocity when forces are this |
Acceleration | A change in velocity or the speed and/or direction of an object |
Inertia | the tendency of a body to maintain is state of rest or uniform motion unless acted upon by an external force. A property of matter |
Net force | 1.the combination of all the forces that act on an object. |
Speed | How fast something is moving |
Velocity | How fast and in what direction an object is moving |
Gravity | the force of attraction between all masses in the universe; especially the attraction of the earth's mass for bodies near its surface |
Joule | Unit used to measure work |
Work | the transfer of energy from one physical system to another expressed as the product of a force and the distance through which it moves a body in the direction of that force |
