Question | Answer |
coordinate plane | a plane formed by the intersection of a horizontal number line (x-axis) with a vertical number line (y-axis) |
x-axis | the horizontal axis (side to side) |
y-axis | the vertical axis (up and down) |
ordered pair | a point in the coordinate plane named (x,y) |
origin | the point where the x-axis and the y-axis meet; (0,0) |
translation | a movement (slide) of a figure along a straight line |
reflection | a change in position of a figure that flips the figure across a line |
dilation | a change in the size of a figure which either reduces or enlarges the picture |
rotation | a change in position of a figure around a fixed point |
similar figures | figures that are the same shape, but are a different size;all of the corresponding parts of the figures have the same ratio |
congruent figures | figures that are the exact same shape and size |
parallel lines | two or more lines in the same plane that never intersect |
transversal | a line that intersects at least two other lines |
corresponding angles | a pair of angles at matching intersections of the parallel lines and the transversal |
alternate interior angles | a pair of angles in between the parallel lines that are on the opposite sides of the transversal |
alternate exterior angles | a pair of angles outside the parallel lines that are on the opposite sides of the transversal |
same side interior angles | a pair of angles in between the parallel lines that are on the same side of the transversal |
sequence of transformations | a set of transformations (translations, reflections, dilations, and rotations) in the coordinate plane that must occur in a specific order to obtain a new figure |
