Question | Answer |
fraction | A fraction is a symbol, such 2/3, 5/1, or 8/5, used to name a part of a whole, a part of a set, a location on a number line, or a division of whole numbers. |
denominator | The quantity below the line in a fraction. It tells how many equal parts are in the whole. |
numerator | The quantity above the line in a fraction. |
benchmark fraction | Fractions that are commonly used for estimation. (1/4, ½, 1/3, 2/3, ¾) |
equivalent fraction | Fractions that name the same region, part of a set, or part of a segment. |
prime number | A number that has only 2 factors: 1 and itself. |
composite number | A number that has more than 2 factors. |
common denominator | If 2 or more fractions have the same denominator, these denominators are known as "common" (or the same). |
common factor | When 2 or more numbers have the same factor, that factor is the common factor |
compose | Putting together larger numbers using their smaller parts. |
decomposing | Breaking apart larger numbers using their smaller parts. |
improper fraction | A fraction with a numerator larger than its denominator. |
mixed number | A whole number combined with a fraction (or decimal). 2 1/2 or 2.5 |
simplest form | A fraction is in simplest form when the greatest common factor (GCF) of the numerator and denominator is 1. |
unit fraction | A fraction where the numerator is a 1. |
whole number | A number that has no fractional or decimal part. |
