| Demography | The statistical study of human populations, specifically birth rates, death rates, natural increase rates, and other factors that affect population change in an area or country.

| Rate of natural increase | The difference between the crude birth rate and crude death rate.

| Crude birth rate | A figure obtained by dividing the number of births in one year by the population and multiplying by 1000.

| Crude death rate | A figure obtained by dividing the number of deaths in one year by the population and multiplying by 1000.

| Population growth rate | The fractional rate at which the number of individuals in a population increases. (Births - Deaths + Immigrants - Emigrants) / population * 1000

| Net migration Rate | The difference between the immigration and emigration rates.

| Doubling Time | The time required for a population to double in size. Can be calculated by using the "rule of seventy". Divide 70 by the natural increase rate for a country to determine the approximate doubling time for that country,

| Demographic Transition Model (Stage 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) | A model that can be used to show the changes in a population's birth rates and death rates, and growth based on its technological development.

| Life expectancy | The average number of years that an individual is expected to live.

| Fertility rate | The number of children a woman will have in her lifetime.
🗑
|
||||
| Population density | The number of people living in a given area.
🗑

| Crude density | Can be determined by dividing the population of a country by its area.
🗑
|
||||
| Nutritional density | The measure of how much nutrition in calories an area of land can produce.
🗑
|
||||
| Carrying capacity | The number of people that the land can support. If the population increases beyond this number there will likely be famine or disease to reduce the population to a manageable level.

| Population census | The collection of statistics about people and activities. In Canada one of these is held every ten years, with a less complete compilation every five years.

| Population pyramid | A graph divided into five year intervals by male and female that shows the age and sex structure of a population.

| Dependency ratio | The ratio between the number of people that are working and those that are over the age of 65 and under the age of 15.

| Overpopulation | Can be determined using the ratio of population to available resources. If a given environment has a population of ten, but there is food or drinking water enough for only nine, then that environment is suffering from ___________________.

| China's one-child policy | A planned birth policy implemented to deal with the problem of overpopulation. Families are allowed to have one child, additional children will result in large fines.
