Cystic Duct   all of the bile ducts are "collectively" known as the BILIARY TREE. Bile produced by the liver flows through the common hepatic duct and into the common bile duct to the duodenum. When the duct is full, bile flows into the cystic duct & gallbladder.

Emesis   AKA Vomit. Happens when impulses are triggered from the stomach or inner ear stimulate the vomiting center in the brain.

Steatorrhea   Greasy, frothy, foul-smelling feces that contain undigested fats. There is not enough of the enzyme lipase b/c of pancreatic disease or cystic fibrosis.

Diverticulum   Weakness in the wall of the colon where the mucosa forms a pouch or tube. It can be caused by eating a low-fat diet, that forms small, compact feces.

Hepatomegaly   Enlargement of the liver due to cirrhosis, hepatitis or cancer

Pancreatitis   Inflammation or infection of the pancreas. Inflammation occurs when a gallstone blocks the lower common bile duct and pancreatic enzymes back up into the pancreas. It can also be due to chronic alcoholism.

Colonic Polyps   Small, fleshy, benign or precancerous growth in the mucosa of the colon.

IBS   Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Disorder of the function of the colon, although the mucosa of the colon never shows any visible signs of inflammation

Inguinal hernia   Hernia in the groin. Weakness in the muscle of the diaphragm or abdominal wall

Hepatoma   "liver; tumor/mass" Cancerous tumor of the liver. liver cancer

PEG   Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy

Protein Albumin   Test for albumin, the major protein molecule in the blood. If albumin level is low it's from poor protein intake.

Absence of Peristalsis   Peristalsis - the esophagus moves food toward the stomach.

Vomiting   Expelled food or chyme see EMESIS

Appendicitis   Inflammation and infection of the appendix. Undigested material becomes trapped in the lumen of the appendix

Intussusception   Telescoping of one segment of intestine inside the lumen of the next segment. The intestine folds back on itself in the same way that one part of a telescope slides into the other. Stops blood flow.

Volvulus   The intestine becomes twisted. Stops blood flow.

BRBPR   Bright Red Blood Per Rectum

Anastomosis   The suturing of one blood vessel to another. "create an opening between two structures; condition, abnormal condition"

Haustra   "Puckered Pouches" That are on the walls of the large intestine that can greatly expand as needed.
