| Why do large organisms require a circulatory system? | They cannot rely on diffusion b/c most of their cells are not in direct contact with the environment. Substances made in one part of the organism may be needed in another.

| Pericardium | Sac of tissue that encloses and protects the heart.

| Myocardium | thick layer of muscle in the walls of the heart. It contracts to pump the blood.

| Atrium | upper chamber of heart

| Ventricle | lower chamber of heart

| Septum | divides the right side of the heart from the left. prevents mixing of oxygen poor & rich blood.

| Pulmonary circulation | right side, from heart to lungs.

| Systemic circulation | left side, heart to rest of body.
