Cite   Means a problem that a state official found during a survey of a facility

Resident's rights   List of things relating how a resident should be treated while living in a facilty

Informed consent   The process in which a person, with the help of a doctor, makes inform decisions about his or her healthcare

Neglect   Harming a person physically, mentally, or emotionally by failing to provide needed care  
🗑
Malpractice   Occurs when a person is injured due to professional misconduct through negligence, carelessness, or lack of skill

Abuse   Purposely causing physical, mental, or emotional pain or injury to someone  
🗑
Physical abuse   Any treatment, intentional or not, that causes harm to a persons body

Psychological abuse   Emotionally harming a person by threats, scaring, humiliating, isolating, or treating like a child

Verbal abuse   Involves the use of language-spoken or written- that threatens, embarrasses, or insults a person

Assault   Legal term that is threatening to touch a person without permission

Battery   A legal term that means a person actually is touched without permission

Sexual abuse   Forcing a person to perform or participate in sexual acts against his or her will

Financial abuse   Stealing, taking advantage of or improperly using the money of someone

Domestic abuse   Abuse by spouses, intimate partners, or family members

Workplace violence   Abuse of staff by residents or other staff members

False imprisonment   Unlawful restraint of someone which affects the person's freedom of movement

Involuntary seclusion   Separating a person from others agaisnt the person's will

Sexual harassment   Unwelcome sexual advancement or behavior

Substance abuse   Use of legal or illegal drugs, Use of legal or illegal drugs, cigarettes, or alcohol in a way that harms self or others

Ombudsman   A person who is assigned by law as the legal advocate for residents

Confidentiality   To keep private things private

Incident   An accident or unexpected event during the course of care

Sentinel event   An accident or incident that results in grave physical or psychological injury

Assisted Living   Facility that provides some help with daily care but do NOT need skilled 24 hour care

Adult daycare   Care given at a facilty during daytime working hours to give family members a break

Acute care   Care that is given in hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers who have an immediate illness

Rehabilitation   Care given in facilities or homes by a specialist like a physical or speech therapist

CNA   Health worker who assists residents with ADLs and needs at least 75 hours of training  
🗑
RN   Licensed professional who has completed 2 to 4 years of education; provides skilled care like passing medications and providing treatments

Dr., MD   This person diagnosis diseases and prescribes medication and treatments  
🗑
Physical therapist   This person evaluates a person and a person increase movement, improves circulation, promotes healing, and regains or maintains mobility

Occupational therapist   This person helps residents learn to compensate for disabilities and helps them relearn or maintain the ability to perform ADLs

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)   An Act passed by congress to keep health information private and secure  
🗑
Speech Language Pathologist (SLP)   A person who helps residents with speech/cognition/swallowing problems  
🗑
Registered Dietician   A person who creates diets for residents with special needs  
🗑
Medical Social worker   A person who determines residents' needs and helps get them support services, such as counseling  
🗑
Activities Director   A person who plans activities for residents to help them socialize and stay active  
🗑
Resident   The most important person in the healthcare team  
🗑
Chronic illness   Conditions that last a long time, even a lifetime  
🗑
Diagnosis   Medical condition determined by a doctor  
🗑
Skilled care   Medically needed care given by skilled nurse or therapist  
🗑
Subacute Care   Care given to people who need more care then LTC, but less then acute care

Acute illness   illness that has severe symptoms, treated immediately and is usually short-term

Outpatient care   given for less than 24 hours, for those who had treatments/surgery

Culture change   term used for process of transforming services to elders so they are based on their values and practices

Care Plan   A plan developed by RN for each resident to help achieve his/her goals

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN/LVN)   Nurse who has completed 1-2 years of education and is licensed

Professional   Having to do with work or a job  
🗑
Personal   Life outside one's job/work  
🗑
Professionalism   How you behave on the job

Compassionate   Being caring, concerned, empathetic, and understanding  
🗑
Empathy   Means entering into the feelings of others. Putting yourself in their shoes

Sympathy   Sharing in the feelings and difficulties of other

Honest   Being truthful and trusted

Tactful (Tact)   Ability to understand what is proper and appropriate when dealing with others

Conscientious   Guided by a sense of right and wrong and try to do their best

Dependable   To make and keep commitments  
🗑
Respectful   Valuing other people's individuality  
🗑
Unprejudiced   Give quality of care no matter what gender, age, race, religion, or condition

Tolerant   Care for each pt and do not judge them even if you don't agree with them
