| Chemical equation | A representation of a chemical reaction showing the relative numbers of reactants and products.
🗑
| Reactants | The starting material for a chemical reaction. It appears before the arrow in the chemical equation.
🗑
| Products | The new material formed by a chemical reaction. It appears after the arrow in the chemical equation.
🗑
| Principle of the conservation of mass | A principle stating that matter is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction, as far as we are able to detect.
🗑
| Bond energy | The amount of energy absorbed upon bond breaking and released upon bond formation. Each chemical bond has its own characteristic bond energy.
🗑
| Catalyst | Any substance that serves to increase the rate of a chemical reaction.
🗑
| Chemical equilibrium | A dynamic state in which the rate of the forward chemical reaction is equal to the rate of the reverse chemical reaction. At chemical equilibrium the concentrations of reactants and products remain constant.
🗑
| Atomic mass unit | A very small unit of mass used for atoms and molecules. One atomic mass unit (amu) is equal to 1/12 the mass of the carbon -12 atom, or 1.661 X 10 to the -24g.
🗑
| Formula mass | The mass of a chemical compound given in atomic mass units.
🗑
| Avogadro’s number | A very large number: 6.02 x 10 23. This is the number of atoms in the atomic mass of an element when expressed in grams.
🗑
| Stoichiometry | An aspect of chemistry involving the calculation of quantities of substances involved in chemical reactions.
