| Tecumseh | A Shawnee chief who worked to unite the Northwestern Indian tribes. He was defeated by an American army led by William Henry Harrison at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. He was killed fighting for the British at the Battle of the Thames in 1813.

| Monroe Doctrine | A statement of foreign policy which proclaimed that Europe should not interfere in affairs within the United States or in the development of other countries in the Western Hemisphere.

| War Hawks | Politicians who were eager for war. They had a strong sense of nationalism, and they wanted to takeover land in North America and expand. They advocated going to war against Great Britain in the War of 1812.

| Gabriel's Rebellion | A planned slave rebellion in Richmond. The plan leaked out just before the march, and authorities rounded up the participants and executed thirty-five of them.

| Louisiana Purchase | The U.S., under Jefferson, bought the this territory from France, under the rule of Napoleon, in 1803. The U.S. paid $15 million. The U.S. gained control of Mississippi trade route and doubled its size.

| The Barbary Wars | A conflict in 1815 between the U.S. and pirates in North Africa. The pirates' demanded tribute from American merchant vessels in the Mediterranean Sea. American naval power attacked the pirate cities and extracted concessions of fair passage.
