| Palestine | The Roman name for Judea. Part of the eastern empire.

| Constantinople | Became the capital of a huge empire. Constantine became emperor. Was named Byzantium.

| Constantine | Became emperor in 306. Focused on the eastern half of the empire and based the empire in a new city on the site of an ancient Greek colony named Byzantium-which was renamed Constantinople.

| Byzantine Empire | After the fall of the western Roman empire, the eastern half lived on for another 1,000 years and was known as this empire. It was named for its roots in the Greek city of Byzantium.

| Roman Catholicism | A branch of Christianity that developed in the western Roman empire and that recognized teh Pope as its supreme head.
