Pax Romana   A period of peace for the Roman Empire that began with the rule of Augustus in about 27 B.C. and lasted around 200 years.

Julius Caesar   Born into a patrician family in 100 B.C. As a boy, he dreamed of becoming a Senate leader, which he did. He also served as a commander in the army. By 59 B.C. he was elected consul of Rome and the following year he became the military governor of Gaul

Gaul   Today is France. Here Caesar won fame, riches, and the loyalty of a great army.

Cleopatra   21 year old ruler of the Egyptian government based in Alexandria. Joined forces with Caesar and defeated her brother, the pharaoh of Egypt. She gave Caesar money he needed to continue fighting for control of Rome.

dictator   Someone who rules with absolute power.

Augustus   "honored one." Octavian took this name.

aqueducts   Waterways built to bring streams of fresh water into the city.

Pantheon   Roman monument. It honored all the gods and goddesses of the Roman world.
