bacterial tracheitis   inflammation and infectio of the upper TRACEA, swelling inflamed tissues, likely began as viral or other preexisting lesion, develops into bacterial super-infection

characteristics   age 1mo - 13yrs, gaurded prognosis(untreated will not do well) , progression from URI

clincal manifestations   HIGH fever, initial croupy cough, progressive stridor, airway compromise, purulent (pus) secretions , general lethargy

tx   dx confirmed by BLD CLUTURE often misdiagnosed early as LTB, Antibiotics- staphylococcus sensitive, IV fluids, oxygen  
🗑
nursing care focus   ongoing AIRway assessment and support, airway maintenance keep secretions Liqufied suction as needed have resuscitation equipment ready, monitor for oxygenation, keep sats greater tha 93%, assess for work of breathing position FLAT to conserve energy  
🗑
meds   antibiotics, antipyrectics; the rapid changes in temp causes febrile seizures, analgesics(non narcotics ONLY)  
🗑
family support and prog   shildren are v. ill and most will need artificial airways and ventilatory support, children with resp distress need their conscious effort to breathe
