Question
Answer
What are the elements of design?   Space, Line, Shape, Form, Texture, & Color
🗑
What are the principles of design?   Balance, Rhythm, Proportion/Scale, Emphasis, Unity
🗑
What is the principle repetition?   Design is copied or repeated
🗑
How does texture affect color?   Smooth surfaces reflect more light than rough surfaces, making them brighter and lighter. Rough surfaces absorb more light, making them look darker and less intense.
🗑
What do curved lines suggest?   Curved lines suggest comfort, relaxation.
🗑
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance?   Horizontal balance is when the left and right sides are equal. Vertical balance is when the top and bottom parts are equal. Radial balance is when the elements radiate out from design.
🗑
What do diagonal lines suggest?   They suggest action, movement, and excitement.
🗑
What is space?   Space is an area provided for a particular purpose. Can have 2 dimension as well as 3 dimensions.
🗑
What are the four types of rhythm?   Gradation, radiation, repetition, continuous line.
🗑
What is asymmetrical balance? Example?   Asymmetrical balance is parts of the design are not identical but are equal in visual weight. EX: Scale holding 3 oranges and on the other side is a 2 bananas.
🗑
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines?   Horizontal lines leads the eye left to right. Vertical lines leads the eye up.
🗑
What is the golden mean?   Golden mean is 3 to 5 ratio.
🗑
What is the difference between shape and form?   Shape is a flat or silhoutte image; 2 dimensions. Form is the outlines edges of a three dimensional object; 3 dimensions.
🗑
What are the five types of balance?   Symmetrical(formal), asymmetrical(informal), radial, horizontal, vertical.
🗑
What does unity or harmony mean?   Unity/harmony means all elements and principles of design work together to create harmony.
🗑
What are the two things texture involves?   It involves how the surface feels to the touch and how it appears to feel.
🗑
What are the four types of line?   Vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and curved.
🗑
What is proportion?   Proportion means that each of the parts are the right size to belong to the whole.
🗑
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest?   Asymmetrical
🗑
What is symmetrical balance? Example?   Symmetrical balance is when both sides are identical. EX: plants, insects, humans.
🗑
What is emphasis? What is another name for it?   Emphasis is when one object/item stands out. Also called focal point.
🗑
What happens when you use a continuous line?   Continuous Line is when the design creates a continuous line for eye to follow.
🗑
What is another name for symmetrical balance?   Formal
🗑
What is another name for asymmetrical balance?   Informal
🗑
What is the difference between gradation and radiation?   Gradation is when the designs increase or decrease in size or one element of design changes.
