Algebraic expression   An expression that contains a variable. For example, if Maria is 2 inches taller than Joe, and if the variable M represents Maria’s height, then the algebraic expression M – 2 represents Joe’s height.

Circumference   The distance around a circle or a sphere; the perimeter of a circle.

Diameter   A line segment that passes through the center of a circle or a sphere and has endpoints on the circle or sphere. The diameter of a circle is twice the length of the radius.

Line graph   A graph in which data points are connected by line segments.

Pan-balance   A tool used to weigh objects or compare their weights.

Pi   The ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi is the same for every circle and is approximately 3.14.

Predict   In mathematics, to say what will happen in the future based on experimental data or theoretical calculation.

Radius   A line segment from the center of a circle (or sphere) to any point on the circle (or sphere).

Rate   A comparison by division or two quantities with unlike units. For example, a speed such as 55 miles per hour is a rate that compares distance with time.

Variable   A letter or other symbol that represents a number. It can stand for one number or many different numbers.
