Question
Answer
Dissociated sensory loss   A pattern of sensory loss in which only one of the tow primary sensory modalities (pain and temperature OR proprioception and vibration) is affected in a specific body region
🗑
Dysesthesia   Unpleasant sensations (burning or tingling) that are produced in response to normal stimuli
🗑
Large fiber neuropathy   Injury to the proprioception-vibration sensory pathways within the nerves of the peripheral nervous system.
🗑
Sensory neglect   Lack of attention or unresponsiveness to stimuli presented. This occurs contralateral (opposite) to the side of the injured hemisphere.
🗑
Radicular pain   Pain in a dermatomal distribution, usually signifying damage to a single nerve root.
🗑
Romberg test   A test of proprioception & vestibular fxn. Pt asked to stand feet together & close eyes. The test is +ve if pt loses their balance w/in 1 min. Further testing can resolve whether a positive Romberg test is due to sensory deficit or vestibular deficit.
🗑
Segmental sensory loss   Segmental sensory loss: Sensory loss in the distribution of a dermatome.
🗑
Sensory ataxia   A form of ataxia (loss of coordination) caused by a loss of the sensory input needed to control movement (joint position, proprioception). Pts have near normal coordination with their eyes open but marked worsening of coordn when eyes closed. (Truncated)
🗑
Sensory drift   Movement of the arms in space due to loss of proprioception (ability to localize in space). This is tested clinically by asking the patient to hold out their arms and close their eyes.
🗑
Small fiber neuropathy:   Injury to the pain-temperature pathways within the nerves of the peripheral nervous system.
🗑
Syrinx/syringomyelia   A pathological cavity in the spinal cord, usually in the cervical region.
🗑
Synesthesia   People with synesthesia (‘to perceive together’) have strange sensory experiences where stimulation of one modality causes an additional unrelated perception. Eg. When indiv hears piano, they might see green. Cause is unknown but maybe due to abn anat cxn
