Formal Teams   Created by the organization as part of the formal organization structure.

Vertical Team   composed of a manager and his or her subs in the organizations' formal chain of command. Functional team or command team. ie. Engineering, Finance, or night nurse team with a leader

Horizontal Team   Composed of employees from about the same hierarchical level but from different areas of expertise. Given a special task. Maybe disbanded after. ie Cross functional teams (task force) and committes. Create a new product, new curriculm

Self Directed Teams   1. Emplyees feel challenged, work meanginful, sense of identity with company. 2. Consisting of 5-20 multiskilled workers who rotate to produce product or service, supervised by elected member. Teams take responsiblity minimum supervision.

Virtual Team   A team made up of members who are geographically or organizationaly dispersed.Rarely meet F2F, use mediated technology. Select right, manage socialization, foster trust, effectively manage communication.

Team Cohesiveness   Teh extent to which team members are attracted to the team and motivated to remain in it. Members of highly cohesive teams are comittted, attend, happy...

Determinants of Team Cohesiveness   Team interaction: more interaction and more time spent -M cohesive (MC) Shared Goals: Agreeing on purpose direction MC Personal attraction to team: members have simliar attitudes values, enjoy eachother. Competition MC & Favorable Eval of team outsider

Consequences of Team Cohesiveness   Morale: HIGHER uniformly effects from MC Productivity: Mixed results. Uniformity is produced. but higher productivty depends on relationship with mgmnt. TF MC does not necccessary lead to higher productivity!

Conflict   Antagonistic interactin in which one party attempts to thwart the intentions or goals of another. *Goal is to bring to surface and address *Virtual teams have more conflict

Groupthink   Tendency for peole to be so committed to a cohesive team that they are reluctant to express contrary opinion. Conflict can prevent groupthink and be a positive thing.
