Definition
Scale   The relationship between a distance on the map and the corresponding distance on the ground.

Easting   The vertical co-ordinate.

Northing   The horizontal co-ordinate.

Cardinal   The 4 main points of a compass.

Green   This colour indicates lowland areas up to 200 metres in altitude on a map.

Brown   This colour represents upland areas on a map.  
🗑
Triangulation pillars   These can be found at the top of a hill or mountain.

Contours   Lines on a map that join places of equal height.

Spot heights   These give the exact height of a point.

Steep   These slopes are indicated by contours that are tightly packed.

Flat   Land that is indicated by an absence of contours.  
🗑
Cliffs   Indicated by contours that are ‘on top of one another’.  
🗑
Convex   This slope is steep at the bottom and gentle at the top.

Concave   This slope is gentle at the bottom and steep at the top.

Cross-section   A slice across and through a landscape to show its shape or profile.

1 kilometre squared   The area of each square on a 1:50000 scale OS map.
