| Mitered Corners | Used to hold the linen firmly in place; A special folding technique that secures linen under mattress.

| Closed Bed | A bed made following the discharge of a patient and after terminal cleaning of a unit. Purpose: Keep bed clean until a new patient is admitted.

| Open Bed | Done to welcome a new patient. Also for patients who are out of bed for short periods of time.

| Fanfolding | Converts a closed bed into an open bed. Folding like accordian pleats.

| Occupied bed | A bed made while the patient is in it.

| Bed Cradle | placed on a bed under the top sheets to prevent bed linen from touching parts of the patients body.

| When is a bed cradle frequently used? | For patients with burns, skin ulcers, lesions, blood clots, circulatory disease, fractures, and surgery on legs and feet.

| Draw Sheets | Extends from the patients shoulders to the patients knees. Used to protect mattress. Sometimes used as lift sheets.

| Two ways to conserve energy while bed making: | 1. Keep linens arranged in order of use. 2. Make bed completely first on one side then on the other.

| How to handle dirty linen: | Roll soiled linen while removing it from bed, hold dirty linen away from body, place in hamper. Wash hands after handling.

| How to handle contaminated linen: | Wear gloves when handling, wash hands frequently, use a self dissolving plastic laundry bag that dissolve during washing process. Double bag the dissolvable laundry bag.
