Area   The number of square units needed to cover a surface enclosed by a geometric figure.

Congruent Figures   Figures that have the same shape and size.

Equation   A mathematical sentence stating that two expressions are equal. Example: 3 x (7 + 8) = 9 x 5

Exponent   A number that indicates how many times a number or expression is to be multiplied by itself. Example: In the expression 5^3, the exponent is 3.

Expression   A mathematical combination of numbers, variables, and operations. Example: 5 + 2

Greatest Common Factor   The greatest number that is a factor of two or more numbers. Example: The greatest common factor of 30, 60, and 15 is 15.

Improper Fraction   a fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator, such as 5/4.  
🗑
Inequality   An open sentence that uses the symbol <, , >, or to compare two quantities.

Integers   The set of whole numbers and their opposites {. . .-2, -1, 0, 1, 2. . .}.

Least Common Multiple   The least nonzero number that is a common multiple of two or more numbers. Example: 36 is the least common multiple of 3, 9, and 12.

Mean   The sum of the numbers in a set of data divided by the number of pieces of data in the set.

Median   The middle number in a set of data when the data are arranged in numerical order. If the data has an even number, the median is the mean of the two middle numbers.

Mixed Number   a number consisting of an integer and a proper fraction such as 3 1/2.

Multiplicative Identity   For any number a, a x 1 = 1 x a = a. Example: 4 x 1 = 1 x 4 = 4

Parallel   Lines in the same plane that never intersect and have the same slope.

Percent   A ratio that compares a number to 100. Example: 76 out of 100 is 76 percent or 76%.

Prime Number   A whole number, greater than 1, whose only factors are 1 and itself.

Product   The result obtained by multiplying two or more numbers or variables.

Quadrants   One of four regions into which the x- and y-axes separate the coordinate plane.

Quotient   The result obtained by dividing two numbers.

Range   The difference between the greatest number and the least number in a set of data.

Rate   The ratio of two measurements having different units of measure. Example: 60 miles per hour

Rational Numbers   The set of numbers that can be written as a fraction.

Repeating Decimals   A decimal whose digits repeat in groups of one or more. Example: 0.181818. . .

Solution   A value for the variable that makes an equation true. Example: The solution of 12 = x + 7 is 5.

Terminating Decimals   A decimal whose digits end. Example: 0.2, -1.345

Variable   A letter or other symbol used to represent an unspecified number or value.

Volume   The number of cubic units needed to fill the space occupied by a solid.

x-Axis   The horizontal number line on a coordinate plane.

y-Axis   The vertical number line on a coordinate plane.
