Numerator   tells how many parts are SELECTED

Demoninator   tells how many TOTAL parts in each whole

Proper or Common Fraction   the numerator is smaller than the denominator Example: 2/3

Improper Fraction   the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator Example: 12/7

Mixed Number   contains a whole number AND a common fraction

Simplifying Fractions   reducing a fraction to the smallest possible equivalent fraction. Example: 6/12 is the same as 1/2

Greatest Common Factor   the biggest factor that the numerator and denominator have in common.

Equivalent Fractions   two fractions that mean the same amount Example: 3/6 and 7/14

Changing Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions   Step 1: multiply the denominator and the whole number. Step 2: add the numerator to your answer (this is your new numerator). Step 3: place your new numerator over your old denominator.
