Essential Vocabulary for Unit 2

Variable   a symbol (usually a letter) used to represent an unknown number

Base (of a power)   the (big) number used in repeated multiplication/division

Exponent   the (small) number that tells us how many times to use the base in multiplication/division

Square of a Number   when you multiply that number by itself

Square Root of a Number   a number that, when used in multiplication two times, gives that number

Cube of a number   when you multiply that number by itself three times

Cube Root of a Number   a number that, when used in multiplication three times, gives that number

±   tells you one value is positive and one value is negative (example: ±3 = 3 and -3

Simplify   to do all possible operations (Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiply and Divide, Add and Subtract)

Expression   a mathematical phrase that can contain numbers, variables, and operations
