Expression | a mathematical combination of numbers, variables, and operations; does not contain an equal sign!
Examples: 5 + 23, 4x, 6x + y^2

Constant | a term that does not contain a variable. For example, 5 is the constant in the expression -2x + 5.

Variable | a letter or other symbol used to represent an unspecified number or value. For example, x is the variable in the expression -2x + 5.

Coefficient | the numerical factor of a term; the number being multiplied by the variable. For example, -2 is the coefficient in the expression -2x + 5.

Term | a number, a variable, or a product or quotient of numbers and variables; terms are separated by addition or subtraction signs. For example, the expression -6 + 4y - 15m has three terms (-6, 4y, and -15m).

Like Terms | terms that contain the same variables raised to the same power; for example, 5x and 3x are like terms

Distributive Property | to multiply a sum by a number, multiply each addend of the sum by the number outside the parentheses.

Standard Form of an Expression | an expression in simplest terms; all like terms are combined

Constant of Proportionality | the constant ratio to which a proportional relationship simplifies
