Compromise of 1850 | California entered as a free state. New Mexico and Utah got popular sovereignty. D.C. banned slave trade. Fugitive slave law strengthened.

What is popular sovereignty? | It is the states right to choose whether they want to be free or slave.

What is nullification? | The states can choose whether they want to follow the federal laws.

Kansas-Nebraska Act | Kansas and Utah get popular sovereignty. It resulted in anti and pro slavery groups fighting.

Election of 1860. | The candidates were: Abraham Lincoln (republican) Stephan Douglas (Democratic North) John Bell (Constitutional Union) and John Breckinridge (Democratic South) Before the election Lincoln and Douglas both went for the Illinois senate seat.

Before the election | While they were debating for the seat they had opinions on slavery. Lincoln favored containment and Douglas favored popular sovereignty. Lincoln, however loses the seat but the debates give him national fame.

Economic and social differences | South was agriculture and North was industrial. North got work force from immigrant labor and South had slaves. South lived in rural areas while North lived in Urban areas.North had diversity and South did not.
