| Emancipation Proclamation, Effective January 1, 1863 | This presidential proclamation (not a law passed by congress) freed all slaves in rebelling states and made it legal for blacks to enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces. This did not change the status of slavery in states that were loyal to the union.

| Gettysburg, July 1- July 3 1863 | Lee for the Confederacy and Meade for Union, considered turning point for the war, Union secured the better terrain withstood attacks from Confederacy. Lee overestimated his army, underestimated the Union Army, ordered assault was disastrous for his army.

| Union Blockade | U.S. Naval blockade of the Confederacy. Although many ships managed to elude the blockade, the blockade was successful in damaging the Confederate economy (cotton exports were reduced severely) and hampered the import of food, medicine, and war materials.

| Sherman's March, November- December 1844 | Sherman marches his troops across Georgia from Atlanta to Savanah. He not only destroyed military targets, but he also destroyed civilian and industrial property including telegraph lines and railroads.
