1821 | Moses Austin acquired the right to settle 300 Catholic families from Lousiana on the Brazos River in Texas.

1836 | Texans earned their independence from Mexico through a series of events including the siege of the Alamo, the massacre at Goliad, and the battle of San Jacinto.

1845 | The United States admitted Texas as the 28th state on December 29, 1845, when President Polk signed the Texas Admission Act.

Absolute Chronology | depends on knowing the precise date of an event, including the day, month and/or year. Sequencing events in absolute chronology means to organize them in an order - like a timeline from oldest to most recent.

1861 | Texas convened a secession convention to vote on severing ties with the union. The convention voted overwhelmingly to secede and join the Confederacy.

Relative Chronology | depends less on specific dates and more on relationships of events - for instance, creating a sequence by developing a topic from its beginning to its conclusion, identifying intervals of time and ordering events in relation to other events.

Battle of Gonzales | The first battle of the Texas Revolution. Mexican forces were ordered to take a brass cannon from the town of Gonzales to San Antonio and Texans refused to give up the cannon. Texans attacked the Mexicans and the battle ended quickly.

Boom and Bust Cycle | Immediately following World War I the economy slowed substantially as demand for goods decreased (a "bust"). In the 1920s increased demand prompted a "boom" or period of rapid growth in the economy.
