Definition
Cardiovascular   Pertaining to the heart and blood vessels. Composed of heart, arteries and veins.

Heart   Sits between the lungs; behind the sternum (breast bone) in the mediastinum. It is divided left and right by the septum (a muscular) wall. It has a two layered protective membrane. Called the Pericardium

Pericardium   Two layers, one sac inside another. Parietal pericardium and visceral pericardium.

Parietal Pericardium   Lies posterior and adjacent to the thoracic vertebrae and inferiorly to the diaphragm. It provides an efficient barrier to infection from surrounding structures.

Visceral Pericardium or Epicardium   Adheres to the heart and the first several centimeters of the great vessels. Pericardial fluid lubricates the pericardium and facilitates movement during the heart's pumping action.

Great Vessels   Aorta, Pulmonary Trunk, Pulmonary Veins, Superior and Inferior Vena Cava

Heart Layers   Epicardium, myocardium, innermost endocardium

Epicardium or Visceral Pericardium   Covers the heart's surface and extends to the great vessels. (Aorta, Pulmonary Trunk, Pulmonary Veins, Superior and Inferior Vena Cava)

Myocardium   Is the contracting muscle of the heart and consists of striated muscle fibers interlaced into bundles.

Endocardium   Innermost muscle is composed of a thin layer of endothelium and a thin layer of connective tissue.
